Nicholas J. Dugo, 72, of Watkins Glen died on Monday, November 26, 2018 at Robert Packer Hospital after a short illness. Nick was born on December 18, 1945, in Bath, NY, the son of the late Joseph and Elaine (Bly) Dugo. Nick first met his future wife Sue when they were in kindergarten together, and have been best friends ever since. Nick graduated from Haverling High School in 1963, along with Sue. He attended Corning Community College and graduated in 1965, serving as Vice-President of the Student Association while there. Nick earned his BA degree in 1967 and MA in 1968 from the University at Albany. At U Albany he was as chairman of the Special Events Board of the Student Association, and also worked as an aide to Assemblyman Charles D. Henderson and as a guide in the NYS Capitol. He and Sue were married at St. Thomas’ Episcopal Church in Bath in August 1968.
Nick was a history teacher and later Department Coordinator at Watkins Glen High School from 1973 until his retirement in 2006. He was the Senior Class advisor for most of those years, planning and escorting 30 senior trips to Washington D.C., producing the annual school play, supervising proms, and other class activities. Nick also served as Student Council advisor at the same time, instituting the Homecoming Parade, sponsoring Blood Banks, voter registration drives, and raising thousands of dollars for graduation scholarships and other student activities.
Nick was an active communicant of St. James’ Episcopal Church in Watkins Glen, serving as Warden since 1975, chairman of the finance committee, and choir member. He also was chairman and chief cook at Parish dinners, arranged the flowers for the Altar, and supervised holiday decorating of the church. He formerly was Moderator of SE District of the Episcopal Diocese of Rochester and as a Diocesan delegate to conventions. He had been a committee member and former treasurer of the Episcopal Parishes of Schuyler County. Nick was elected to the position of Watkins Glen Village Justice on a write-in ballot 1987, and continued in that position until he retired in 2015. He served as Secretary of Watkins Glen Housing Authority from 1981 to 2010, was a charter member of WG-MF Lions Club and in his later years he worked at Royce-Chedzoy Funeral Home greeting guests and driving the hearse.
Nick enjoyed spending summers at their cottage at Lake Ondowa. As a hobby, he made custom doll houses for family, friends and the church. He was also an avid reader and enjoyed doing crossword puzzles. He enjoyed spending time with his family and will be remembered for his pies and his chocolate torte.
He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Susann (Wintle) Dugo; daughter, Amy (Michael) Lingg of Williamsport; son, Peter Dugo (Kimberly O’Connor) of Corning; grandsons, Steven and Ryan Lingg; brothers and sisters, Josette (Alan) Stuart, Chuck (Linette) Dugo, Julie Dugo (Robert Jeffery), Danny (Valerie) Dugo, Sharon (Hank) Stanhope; sisters-in-law, Carol Wintle (Larry Blumsack) and Alis (Jim) Sefick; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his brother, Robert Dugo.
