Obituary for Richard "Dick" Richtmyer

Richard “Dick” Richtmyer

Age 80, of County Line Road, Watkins Glen, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his family on Tuesday, February 14, 2017.

Born in Penn Yan, NY on December 12, 1936, he was the only son of Theodore and Florence Richtmyer. He graduated from Watkins Glen High School in 1954. Dick operated an excavating business from 1958-1974 and operated a family farm. He later worked as the Highway Superintendent for the Town of Dix for 28 years and retired in 2016. He was recognized numerous times for his dedicated service to the Town. Dick also served as a councilman for the Town of Reading. He was known as a friendly, hardworking man who “never met a stranger”.

He is predeceased by his parents, and sister and brother-in-law, Ruth and Stewart Wilson. He is survived by his wife Irene (O’Grady) Richtmyer. They would have celebrated 60 years together on Feb. 15, 2017. He is also survived by five children, Richard J. II (Cheryl) Richtmyer of Watkins Glen; Deborah (Douglas) Gunning of Trumansburg, Denise (Richard) Morris of Watkins Glen, Douglas (Katherine) Richtmyer of Watkins Glen, and Dennis (Faith) Richtmyer of North Carolina; 14 grandchildren, Richard J. III Richtmyer and Ashley Evans, Brian (Amanda) Gunning, Susan (Jared) Marsh, Virginia (Michael) Gunning, Theodore, Kimberly and Jason Morris, Thomas, Chase and Walker Richtmyer, Kyrstin (Aaron) Dyson, Andrew, Adam, and Emma Richtmyer; and 9 great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends at the Royce-Chedzoy Funeral Home, 212 E. 4th St., Watkins Glen on Sunday (Feb. 19) from 2pm-4pm; followed by a funeral service at the funeral home at 4:00pm. The committal service will be held at Glenwood Cemetery in Watkins Glen on Monday at 1:00pm.
