Obituary for Thomas R. Thorp

Thomas R. Thorp
Thomas R. Thorp
Age 69, of Hector, passed away unexpectedly on November 30, 2016 at home. The family will receive friends on Sunday (Dec. 4) from 2pm-5pm at the Royce-Chedzoy Funeral Home, 212 E. 4th St., Watkins Glen. A funeral service will be held Monday at 10am at the Glen Baptist Church, 3311 Reading Rd, Watkins Glen. A burial at the Hector Presbyterian Cemetery will be held at the convenience of the family. He is survived by his loving wife of 50 years, MaryJo Thorp; 5 children, Carine (Robert) Kenyon of Brooktondale, NY; Fredrick Thorp of Hector, Heather (Brian) Sheeler of Eldred, PA; Sarah (Chris) Macnamara of Dundee, and Benjamin (Christina) Thorp of Dundee; 3 siblings, John (Jeannette) Thorp of Sebring, FL, Paul (Patricia) Thorp of Georgetown, DE, and Timothy Thorp of Sebring, FL; 11 grandchildren, Austin, Felica, Andrew, Levi, Emmalee, Makayla, Kelsey, Katie, Maddie, Jenna, and Michael; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by an infant daughter, TamiJo Thorp; brother, David Thorp; and parents, John and Ellen Thorp. Tom was a lifelong resident of Hector. He was a member of the Glen Baptist Church. He worked as a Postal Clerk in Ithaca.
Tom had a faith in Jesus Christ that never wavered through all of his life’s trials and triumphs. He attended Glen Baptist Church for 50 years where he was a well known pitcher and coach of the softball team. He was extremely devoted to his family and always strived to put others first. He was happiest when he was working to help family members or friends. That work usually involved fixing vehicles or cutting, splitting, and stacking firewood. He loved to spend time outdoors doing yard work and was an avid hunter. He was perhaps better known for hitting deer with his cars racking up at least 55 over the years. He thoroughly enjoyed the many large family gatherings for holidays and birthdays. He especially loved good food and really enjoyed taking his wife and family out to dinner whenever possible.
Memorial donations in his memory may be made to the Glen Baptist Church or a charity of one’s choice. You may leave condolences for the family or “Light a Candle of Remembrance” online at www.RoyceChedzoy.com.
