Obituary for Edward J. Cullen

Edward J. Cullen
EDWARD J. CULLEN
We announce the passing of our loving husband and father, Edward James Cullen, on November 16, 2016, at home in Watkins Glen, NY. He was born in Elmira, NY March 3, 1931. He was pre-deceased by his parents, Marian Edna Caywood Cullen and Edward Richard Cullen. He is survived by his loving wife of 66 years, June Spencer Cullen, daughter Barbara (Robert) Chapman and son, Stanley (Anna) Edward Cullen, both of Rock Stream NY. A sister, Nancy Cullen Davis of Hector, NY, a brother Charles Cullen, Pittsburgh, PA, 4 grandchildren, 2 great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Ed was a lifelong resident of Schuyler County, NY. He graduated from Watkins Glen High School in 1949. He proudly served his country in the US Army in Goeppingen, Germany, post WWII. During his life, he lived a life of service to his community through the following organizations: Boy Scouts of America for 25 years, earning their Silver Beaver Award in 1963. Director and President of the Squires Drum and Bugle Corp, Deacon of the First of Baptist Church of Watkins Glen, Past President of the Schuyler County United Way, Director of the Schuyler Hospital Foundation, member of Doctors Scholarship Committee for Schuyler County , President of Rotary Camp Star and President of Literacy Volunteers. In his later years, he enthusiastically embraced and supported Rotary International. His was a past president of Watkins-Montour Rotary Club. He then served as District Governor of Rotary International District 7120 representing his district throughout the world in Scotland, Australia and New Zealand. One of his proudest accomplishments was his tireless work to benefit Rotary’s International Polio Plus campaign. He was an example of Rotary’s “Service Above Self”. He was a recipient of Rotary’s Distinguished Service Award from the Trustees of the Rotary Foundation, Citation of Meritorious Service of Rotary International and a Paul Harris Fellow. None of his many accomplishments would have been possible without June’s strong and unwavering support. His family could not be more proud of his service to others. He graduated from the ‘school of hard knocks’ and retired as the Vice President of Manufacturing for Shepard Niles Crane and Hoist Company in Montour Falls, NY, after 37 years. He was known for his fair, firm and supportive management style and strong relationship with his peers. After retirement, he served as a consultant at Schweizer Aircraft in Big Flats, NY. He was an avid hunter and fisherman, enjoying many hours on Seneca Lake and hunting at the family farm. He was an accomplished woodworker, building many family keepsakes and furniture. His legacy of service will be remembered by all that worked and served with him. “To know that one life has breathed easier because you have lived. This is to have succeeded.
